How NOT to train for a half-marathon

0

Today is my 'runniversary'!

One year ago today, I decided to take this running stuff seriously and I started the nine-week program, Couch to 5k. Seven weeks later, I would run my first 5k with my friends Amanda and Jen (thank you, ladies!). Since then, I've run several timed 5k's, a 10-miler, an obstacle course, and just two weeks ago, a half marathon.
I have to confess, I did not properly train for the half marathon (which I will recap in another post). I probably did more wrong than I did correctly. So today I am going to share with you...

In other words: Do everything the exact opposite of the way I did it. Except for the ice cream. If you are going to run a half-marathon, you deserve a turtle sundae now and then.

I grew up in a pretty small town - of course, what town in Delaware isn't small? Everyone knew everyone. You could barely step out of your front door without running into someone you knew. For some, this is idyllic and nothing short of part of the American dream. For me, it was torture. As a kid and young adult I generally did not like running into people, having to drum up conversation, or pretending to care about their extended family. Yeah, I was an introverted jerk.

This town has since grown and the residents seem to have tripled and quadrupled in the almost 20 years since I graduated from high school and moved away.  However, my parents still live there as do many of the people I grew up with. Thankfully, time, maturity and an appreciation for the fact that life changes people has relieved me of my introverted jerkiness. But that doesn't change the fact that there are just some people in life that, when face-to-face with them, I'd rather throw myself into a pit of glass shards then show them any civility.  This is the danger of visiting my home town. Facing the choice between gritting my teeth and cranking out a smile, or pointy, stabby, slow, and painful death.

Decisions, decisions.

This weekend I returned to my hometown for their annual Peach Festival. I was excited to show Christian and Izzy my little town (and if you've ever seen Dead Poet's Society, you've seen a lot of it too!). Even though the edges of town are seemingly barricaded with an army of 'Big Box' stores and every fast food mecca that you can think of, the heart of the town is virtually unchanged. Victorian-era homes line the streets and quaint storefronts are adorned with flags proclaiming they are open for business, selling everything from coffee to antiques. There is even a small hardware store that has survived in the shadow of the Lowe's that is mere footsteps from its door.

Yes, my hometown is quite the slice of Americana. Everything is changing while simultaneously staying exactly the way it was 20 years ago - which brings us back to the people. I've reconnected with a lot of my classmates through Facebook and have a renewed appreciation for most of them. But there are several that I'd rather not talk to and it seems like every time I visit my hometown, these people are thrown into my path as if we were magnetically drawn to one another through some cosmic joke.

I saw Dreaded Person #1 in the crowd. She was stealthily walking toward me with a glean of recognition in her eye. Panicking, I began to formulate an escape plan in my head. I surveyed the area...Port o' Potties...yes! I would claim tainted peach pie and run for the crapper. To my surprise, my worry went to waste as her look of recognition turned to one of confusion and she sailed right past me with out even so much as a nod of the head or a knowing smile.

It was in that moment that this small town girl knew she had finally realized her destiny with greatness. I had developed SUPER POWERS.

As all three of the people on my 'avoid at all costs' list walked past me with no signs of recognition or awkward avoidance on their part, it dawned on me that losing weight had given me the power of being a Master of Disguise. I commented to my mother how great it was to avoid people thanks to the fact that I look next to nothing like my former self. She laughed and agreed that even she barely recognizes me. I came to realize that in the past year and a half I have gained numerous super powers.
  • Matter Ingestion: Ability to consume any sort of matter without any ill effects on the user.
I can eat almost anything without getting a stomach ache or #2 issues.
  • Superhuman Longevity: Ability to live longer than a normal human. Okay, this one remains to be seen. But realistically, I stand the chance of outliving quite a few people if I keep up a healthy regimen.
  • Mind control: The ability to alter perceptions, and general ability to control the actions with the mind. I alter my thinking on a daily basis to identify and resolves issues that are not conducive to weight loss and maintenance.
  • Animation: Ability to bring inanimate objects to life or to free an individual from petrification.
Otherwise read as: I get my ass up off the couch - even when I don't feel like it.
  • Shape Shifting: Ability to increase or decrease one's size.
I can squeeze into some pretty tight spaces these days and still have room to spare.
  • Density control: Ability to increase or decrease the natural density of an one's self.
Gain a little? No problem, I get back on track and it will come right back off!
  • Psychic powers/ESP: Ability to project one's consciousness/psyche/emotions into the astral plane, into another, or to make them real.
I can identify possible triggers and stamp them out before they even become an issue.
  • Substance mimicry: Ability to transform any substance.
I've gotten really good at turning high-calorie foods into low-calorie foods. All it takes is swapping out and ingredient here and there.
  • Magnetism manipulation:  Ability to control and/or generate magnetic fields.
Layman's Terms: the dudes love me. Some of the ladies too.
  • Animal Mimicry: Ability to take on the characteristics of certain animals.
I'm like a cheetah when I put my sneakers on! Okay...maybe its a very old cheetah that is possibly missing two of it's four limbs and has arthritis in the remaining two. But that's still a pretty fast cheetah!
Not a super power: Elasticity.
I'm like a spent Stretch Armstrong with all of my floppy skin.

...and now in slo-mo:

Clearly, I am no superhero. My Achilles Heels range from stress, to cupcakes, to wine. But if you've ever watched any superhero movies, more often than not their triumph lies in their drive to succeed, the want to conquer the things that seem so much bigger than even they can handle with their superhuman strength. What matters most is their will to overcome any obstacle in their path - especially their own weakness.

You don't need super powers to be successful at weight loss - you just have to want it bad enough. You have to have the courage to overcome even the most seemingly insurmountable obstacle.

Harness your hidden super powers and meet your destiny.

(And if you think you still need a superhero cape to harness your powers - go visit my friend Sherry. She'll make you one.)

So...I did this:
Fun fact: Before I edited this photo, you could totally see
the reflection of my boob in the glass scale.
Nip and all.
You are welcome for that imagery.

Then I went on vacation for 12 days. And well, I sorta blew it. I went to BlogHer12, sheepishly telling people about meeting my goal. I wasn't as excited as I should have been. I didn't feel like I deserved the accolades that people tried to heap upon me. And even though I was so excited to have met my goal in time for the conference I knew that meeting my goal would be short-lived.

I've been struggling to write about this because my original thought was that I had just decided 'Hey! I'm on vacation! I met my goal! I'm gonna let loose and let the chips fall where they may....right in my mouth!'. I was going to tell you how I just decided that I had earned and deserved a break.

What a load of crap.

Every time I started to type it out, it just did not ring true with me. Sure it was partly true. I was ready to just enjoy myself. I was tired of tracking food. Tired of watching others enjoy all the goodies that, for the most part, I had denied myself in the past year. I wanted to be lazy and break free and just turn off the part of my brain that works so hard at keeping myself on track. However, a break for me isn't the same as it is for others. Lack of structure and accountability are a wild, slippery slope for me.

The first leg of vacation I headed up to NYC for Blogher12. I did really well. For starters I was there representing Medifast. So how would it look if you found me in the lobby of the Hilton covered in buttercream icing? (Magnolia Bakery was just around the corner, by the way.) Through the conference and for the first 8 days or so of vacation, I minded my portions, I limited my drinking, and with the exception of my birthday dinner (Mexican and margaritas!), I let myself relax. I ate what I wanted without going too crazy. That was the first eight days.

Then on day nine, the plague I had been fighting - the Great Black Death of BlogHer12 finally hit me with all of it's might.

And I don't know which one of you chicks gave it to me. But I am saving a portion of it in a petri dish. All I'm saying is you bitches better take your AirBorne before leaving for Chicago next year.

Yes, I was ready for a break. But the real truth is that realizing my goal scared the crap out of me and it always has. And I kinda freaked out a little. I had a terrible cold over vacation so I was kicking the dirt and having a pity party for myself. I took that 'I deserve a break' mentality at every opportunity. I even remember saying a few times that my stomach was 'tired'. I was cramming so much into that it felt stretched to its limit; as if it had been doing strenuous exercise. And I couldn't stop! The last few days of vacation were a ridiculous free-for-all. I couldn't even tell you everything I ate.

By late Saturday I was disgusted and ready to get back on plan. I was back in that place of obsessing over what I ate, when I'd eat again, and how I'd feel after I ate it. I was cranky, sick with my cold and sick over how I'd let myself unravel, and I was tired of being worried about what the scale would read come Monday.

On Monday I was up 4.5 pounds. Everyone keeps telling me 'that's not that bad'. But the thing people are failing to see is my perspective. I fought so hard to get that one hundred pounds. It took FOREVER to get there. And I couldn't even hold onto it for a week. I wasn't worried about getting the weight back off. I was just disappointed that something I wanted so badly was given up so easily. Just like I didn't care for the one precious body I had by making it sick with obesity, I didn't care enough about this goal to keep it. I felt like I let myself down.

I've always said that I just wanted to hit the one hundred mark but didn't expect to stay there. I just didn't think I'd let it go so quickly. It makes me worry for my long term success. I don't know...maybe that's not a realistic way to think?

Every day will get easier but the finality of being in maintenance - even though I had given it much thought in the past few months and believed I was prepared - the act of being done with the regimen that has been my life for the past eighteen months was depressing and scary.

What Now?

Now, I try again.

Because you know what's especially pathetic about all of my whining? If you sat across from me and told me this story, I'd say 'WHO CARES!'

Who cares that you gained some weight on vacation. Who cares if you ate nothing but raw sugar dipped in honey and slathered in Ranch dressing? (for the record, that didn't actually happen.) Weight can be lost again and again. Did you enjoy it? (mostly) Then what's the problem? As long as you got up this morning and decided to try again, everything that happened last week doesn't matter. Because every day that you decide to try, you are that much closer to where you'd rather be. As long as you are trying, you aren't failing.

So today I try.

I've been dusting myself off all week long. I'm repeating the last week of transition (1,100-1,550 calories). I'm getting back into running after taking much too long of a break because of (heat and laziness). As of today, Thursday, I'm back down to 142 (2.5lbs gone).

A few weeks ago I went to see one of my favorite musicians, Kate Miller Heidke, at World Cafe Live in Philly. One of the things I love about her is that she does a lot of small, intimate shows. About two years I had the chance to meet her after a show at Arden Gild Hall in Delaware and was so excited that I had an opportunity to have a new photo take with her this year.

Kate is really tiny. So when I met her in 2010, I felt gigantic next to her. *ahem* And even though I'm a good 4-5 inches taller than her (I'm squatting down in both photos), I felt like a normal person next to her this time around!

Well, it has taken me all week to write this post. I have much more to share with you about BlogHer and all of the wonderful bloggers I met that want to take charge of their health. So I will get to work on that post next! (and hopefully it won't be another 3 weeks before I get that up!)

But for now, I am off to have my weekly chat with my Medifast dietitian and then get my butt out there and log some miles!

Where did I leave off the last time we did one of these? Oh yes, I had gained weight. I was having some minor health issues and I had gone on a little mini-vacation to the shore. I also had a pity party over my health issues and convinced myself that it was okay to eat lard straight from a bucket with a slathering of buttercream icing on top.

Okay, it wasn't that bad. But the damage I did, however slight, was my own damn fault (as it always is barring lady issues or confinement to a hospital bed or something).

After my weekend of fun, I got right back on the horse and continued with transition. Also, for the most part, I stayed off the scale. In the last fifteen days I have weighed myself twice on back to back days. Before that I was usually weighing every 2-3 days to keep myself in check. The scale wasn't moving and I was no closer to my final goal than I was a month ago. And the thought occurred to me that:

  1. This might not be a healthy habit to participate in
  2. I cannot live my life by the scale.
  3. I need to learn to let go of that scale and rely on myself and my ability to make good choices. I need to trust myself.
So that's what I did. Until this morning I had not weighed myself in about a week. I had been following the transition plan but had little hope that I had lost. In fact, I was bracing myself for a gain. It's been incredibly and dangerously hot and humid here in Delaware. We've barely gone outside to spend time in the pool, let alone go out for runs. And our schedule simply doesn't allow for us to go after the sun goes down or before it comes up. To run in the morning, I'd have to get up at 4am and be back before C leaves for work at 430. And because we have to be at work so early in the morning, we are usually in bed by 9pm. After dinner, bath and story time, little room is left for much else. Admittedly I could have been doing exercise videos - but I slacked. I've also been incredibly busy with side projects and preparing to go to BlogHer and vacation the following week.

All of that to say - I watched what I ate and didn't expect much when I got on the scale this morning. You can imagine my surprise and delight when the scale read 142.5lbs.

That's 2.5 pounds from my goal of 100 pounds lost.

I know I say it all the time but never in my life did I think I'd get so close to meeting my goal. I really don't even know what to say about it. Its exciting and scary and really just amazing. When I look at where I was and who I was, I never would have dreamed this was really and truly possible. And even though I haven't been doing all the right things, I've been doing some of the right things. That truly does count for something. No, I can't go through my entire life doing things half way. But I can do things half way every once in a while and still have a better outcome than if I had done nothing at all.

This is my last week of transition before I move into the maintenance phase of my Medifast journey. I'm really hoping that I will see those last 2.5 come off before I move into maintenance - but what I'm really hoping is that I see it by my 35th birthday, which is next Saturday, August 4th. I can't think of a more perfect birthday present.

I wanted to share this funny from Pinterest with you. Once in a while I will pin my progress photos. By far, this one gets the most comments. Most of them are completely positive and wonderful. But I've had a few people that were not quite convinced that the woman in the before and after photo are the same person!
 • • •
The other thing I wanted to share was this dress. I wore this on my honeymoon in 2007 and even then I had no business wearing it. I was far too heavy and it was way too tight. Now, it fits perfectly. In fact, a few more pounds and it may be too big! I'm glad I have an opportunity to wear it again!

Take it off | Week 70-71: Criminal Minds

0

When I was obese, I often saw my body as a prison. It prevented me from doing things that I wanted to do. I used my body as a way to hide myself from the world and as a way to keep the world safe. All the while I didn't realize how much harm I was doing by simply existing in this prison. When I decided to get healthy, I saw my diet as a work release program. I had to earn my health, my happiness and my freedom from obesity.

Transition, to me, is like parole. It's a chance to prove to everyone that has invested so much time in me that I can beat this issue. But more importantly its my chance to prove to myself that I can succeed at maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I can be a functional and motivated member of the healthy side of society.

Unfortunately I've fallen off the straight and narrow. I had been dabbling in petty crimes and finally my luck ran out. My parole has been revoked and I'm throwing myself back in the slammer.

The past nine days have been bad. Baaaaaad. Lots and lots of stress that pushed me to the limit. Let me give you a run-down:

Y'all...I'm up three pounds. I've had my first ever, honest to goodness gain. And it's not like the gains I've had in the past where I've been right as rain the next day after lots of water. This one is a keeper...well, sort of.

Update: When I weighed in Monday I was up 3 pounds. As of Tuesday morning, I've lost 1.5 pounds. So I am up 1.5 pounds.

I let stress, birthday sadness and my insane, out-of-control fear of dental work (more on that later) get the better of me. These things will happen. My weight will fluctuate. But I need to be held accountable for my misconduct.

I am on house arrest. I need to get myself in check. Even though the total gain was not too bad, my eating patterns were terrible. The freedom has been very nice and lots of fun. But the whole point of this journey is to harness control over my choices and put them into action. I chose to get healthy and I am choosing to stay that way. I need to stay that way. I need to follow the rules and get this right. I need to stay on the straight and narrow and complete Transition by the book. I have my whole life ahead of me to enjoy the 'fruits of life' (reminder: wine is not a fruit).

I can get through the next month following Transition by the letter and that's what I intend to do. I'm starting Week 3 over again (adding dairy). So I will have extra servings of veggies, fruit and dairy in addition to my Medifast meals this week. I will move on to Weeks 4-6, adding grains and more protein, next week. I'll get back on track and stay there. I just have to keep trying.

Take it off | Week 69: Whiskey Bent and Hellbound

I'm a little red-faced. Apparently the Transition information I posted last week was outdated! Turns out that Transition is now only six weeks. That means I will be in maintenance for my birthday!

So this is what Transition actually looks like.

Thankfully no damage was done - not that an extra week of just another serving of veggies would have hurt anything. But I am just a TAD excited about introducing fruit this week.

Sadly, this does not count as fruit:
Sucks. I mean, it's MADE with fruit.

But I did get to start my week o' fruity delights with a slice of watermelon after running the Baltimore Women's Classic with my friend Amanda. Boy, let me tell you, this was my hardest race to date, and this person is the reason why.
That's right, my friend Ellen is the sole reason that I nearly barfed twice while running the BWC. ALLLLLL HER FAULT. Not only did she drag me through Annapolis on a Makers Mark whiskey bar crawl (and judging by that photo, I'm guessing I was roofied at some point), she had me out dancing until about 1am. Finally we went back to her apartment to get some rest. Sadly for us her landlord had not installed an air conditioning unit. Rather he mistook a dryer with a single tennis shoe in it as a cooling unit. All night long, clunk.clunk.clunk.clunk. But thanks to the roofies I still slept pretty well and praise Captain Morgan did not wake up with any facial tattoos.

Ellen - you are the Elaine Benes and Jerry Seinfeld to my running dreams. ;)

Seriously though, BWC was baaaad and it was totally my fault. I stayed out way too late the night before. But I had not seen Ellen in a year and I was throwing caution to the wind. And even though it was 90 degrees before 8am on the day of the race (at least it felt like it was), even though I wanted to admit defeat before I even got my timing chip tied to my shoe, and even though I could feel that Makers Mark coming back to haunt me as I cleared the second mile, I finished. I had to walk for about 30 seconds twice (or was it 3 times. ugh) but I wasn't quitting until I crossed the finish line. I made this mess of myself and I was committed to seeing this goal through. Boy, does that sound familiar or what? That's pretty much my weight loss story in a nut shell.

You know what really pushed me through though? Hearing Renee from Medifast yell my name from the sidelines halfway through the race and then again at the finish line. Renee has been one of the many people that encouraged me to keep up with the running. To let her know how much I appreciated the support, as I passed her to cross the finish I yelled to her "I still hate it!" To which she replied "Keep going anyway!" The amount of support I get from these folks never ceases to amaze me. And then I nearly kissed her when she later said to me "I almost missed you. I didn't even recognize you!" Flattery will get you everywhere, my dear. Especially if I was probably roofied the night before and a lil' hung over.

I finished the race in 34:12.1. I'm happy with that - because, hell, it should have been a whole lot worse. I told Amanda that I owe her another race. I felt bad that I slowed her down. Want to know what race she suggested to me this morning? The Charm City 5k Trail Run at Boordy Vineyards. My liver is crying right now.

But I am so glad I had my fun in Annapolis and tortured myself at the Baltimore Women's Classic. I finally got to meet another Medifast employee and Twitter pal, Dianne (who brought me some epic Medifast swag!). And  I got to spend some quality time with Amanda as she celebrated her run-iversary by finishing the BWC for the second year in a row. Last but not least, I came home with mystery bruises all over my arms and legs as a souvenir of my time spent with Ellen. Mystery bruises are always a sign of a good time had by all. If you don't come out of a weekend away from home without an injury then you are doing something wrong! Am I right?

So...how did I do in terms of weight loss this week? Well...heh...Monday morning was not great. duh. But things evened out by Tuesday morning - so we are going with that number! I am still at 144.5, which I am totally happy with. Because let's face it, I should be singing some serious scale blues right now. You'd think I'd be completely relieved to break even (after lots and lots of water on Monday). But there is this weird part of me that feels like I should have been punished with a gain or something. Isn't that ridiculous? I did all this bad stuff and got away with it. And that seems to be how it goes for me in this past year. I don't want it to be just luck. I want it to mean that I've learned how to right the ship. That I can have my fun but get back on track instead of spiraling out of control because I've 'gotten away with it' time and again.
As I inch my way closer to maintenance I worry that I will lose myself in these new freedoms. (Mind you, boozing it up is NOT one of those freedoms.) I worry that my 'luck' will run out and I will slide backwards. Hopefully if that ever happens though, I will just recall the time I nearly barfed my way through the BWC and finished the race anyway. I'll hark back to that time when I knew I had to finish what I started. I'll also recall how crappy I felt this past Sunday and use it as a lesson to quit while I am ahead.

Now if you don't mind, I have a bruise I need to ice. Can you pass the Advil and two medium sized pieces of fruit? :)

Take it off | Week 68: Finish Strong

0

Gah. Sorry for the delay on this post (not that I've been on time lately anyway). But I was trying to make a video for you all and it just wasn't working out for me. Hopefully later this week.
If you follow me on Twitter, you know that The Beard and I participated in the Warrior Dash this past weekend. To say that I was excited about this event is an understatement. Like my husband said when he gave me a muddy kiss at the finish line, this will go down in the top 5 best things we ever did together. Likewise it will go down in the top five best things I've ever done for myself.
As we stood at the start line chanting "FINISH STRONG!" and making Viking hooks with our thumbs, I was excited but scared. I have little to no upper body strength and was so worried that I would have to pass on many of the obstacles. But I was determined to try. In fact, I was determined to do better than try. I would drag myself through these obstacles even if it meant being there all day. I was in this until the bitter end.
And just like I've conquered the obstacles of my weight loss journey, I kicked each obstacle's ass! I had doubt, nerves and at some points I almost cried from fear, convinced that I couldn't do this, that I would be hurt or even worse, fail at the entire thing. But just like losing weight  all I had to do was face it head-on and try. And where there is just a tiny bit of courage, determination will follow. More and more I find that sheer determination makes up for so much more than brute strength.
I climbed 15-20 foot walls with no footing and just a rope. I tested my balance from 6 feet up on wobbly 2x4's and then again over a moat. I ran through muddy pits, got down on my scraped knees in rocky trenches. I swam under barbwire through thick mud. I jumped over fire, TWICE.
When I signed up for the Warrior Dash people told me 'Oh, this is the easy one. The photos on the site are deceiving.' To all of those people I say 'You are out of your god damn mind. WTF course did you run?' In some ways, I imagine that's how some of you, at the beginning of attempting to lose weight must feel. It feels impossible in the beginning - but when you look back you tend to say 'Well, that wasn't so bad.' It's so easy to forget where you came from after you've been through it and moved on.

I remember how hard it was in the beginning, middle and end. I vow to never forget how hard losing weight was or this challenge. And like my weight loss journey, every obstacle was worth fighting to overcome. I started strong, I paced myself to stay strong and I finished strong, knowing I gave it my all right through to the end. For all the fear, nerves and pain, I would do it again and again to cross that finish line.
Even if it is a little rough and dirty.

On Monday, I began Transition. Over the coming weeks I will slowly add more calories into my daily diet. The amount of time spent in Transition varies for each person. Because I've lost nearly 100lbs, Transition should take about 12 weeks.

4 to 6 oz serving of lean meat (1 serving)**
AND 1 serving of whole grain***

So far this week I've been enjoying cauliflower - I've been on a kick for it. I am SUPER excited about week 4 when I get to have fruit. I sampled a few cubes of watermelon that I was giving to Izzy last week and it was soooooo good. I forgot how much I enjoyed fruit.

As I move into Transition and re-introduce foods back into my diet I will continue to weigh in every week. I will set new goals and remain on a path that facilitates healthy choices. My words here on this blog will become even more important in the coming weeks and even years as I move toward maintaining a healthy weight for the rest of my life.
It's more important than ever to remind myself why I wanted to lose weight to begin with.
